Chemical Peels: Beautiful Skin Doesn't Happen Overnight

Why a Gentle, Progressive Approach Can Give You Better, Longer-Lasting Results

When I mention a chemical peel to a client, I sometimes see that little look of hesitation. I know exactly what they're thinking!

Is my face going to be red? Am I going to peel like a snake? Will I have to hide at home for a week?

The good news? Chemical peels have come a long way!

Today's professional formulations allow us to address concerns like sun damage, pigmentation, uneven texture, and aging skin without necessarily experiencing the dramatic peeling and downtime you might imagine.

And here's something I always want my clients to understand: When it comes to correcting your skin, stronger and faster aren't always better.

Why I Love Peel Season

Fall and winter are wonderful times to focus on correcting summer sun damage and pigmentation. With shorter days and generally less intense sun exposure, it's often easier to protect your skin while we work on improving it.

Think back to those summers when we covered ourselves in baby oil and spent hours soaking up the sunshine. (Yes, I'm guilty, too!)

Unfortunately, the damage from those carefree days can take years to become visible. Those little brown spots that seem to appear out of nowhere? Many have been developing beneath the surface for quite some time.

If it took years for that damage to develop, it makes sense that correcting it won't happen overnight.

Why I Believe in Slow and Steady

I understand wanting results quickly. We all do!

But when we're working with pigmentation, being too aggressive can actually work against us. Excessive inflammation can trigger additional pigmentation, especially in skin that's already prone to discoloration.

That's why I prefer a gentle, progressive approach.

Rather than jumping into an aggressive peel, I like to begin with a treatment appropriate for your skin's condition and gradually build from there.

This gives me an opportunity to see how your skin responds, make adjustments along the way, and encourage healthy cellular renewal without unnecessarily compromising your skin's protective barrier.

My goal isn't to see how much skin we can make peel. My goal is to help your skin function and look its best!

What Can You Expect?

Every client's skin is different, so there isn't a one-size-fits-all treatment plan.

For many of my corrective clients, I recommend a series of chemical peels approximately 4–6 weeks apart. We may begin with a lighter peel and gradually adjust the strength or formulation as your skin becomes more receptive.

Some clients benefit from a series of six treatments, while others need more or fewer. Sometimes we'll take a break from peels altogether and concentrate on hydration, nourishment, and strengthening the skin barrier.

And don't worry — a chemical peel doesn't have to mean your skin will visibly peel!

You may experience some light flaking or dryness, but many superficial peels involve very little downtime.

Your Home Care Is Just as Important!

One thing I always emphasize is that what you do at home matters just as much as what we do in the treatment room.

Think of your professional treatments as the corrective work and your home care as the daily support that helps us achieve and maintain those improvements.

The right combination of ingredients can encourage cellular renewal, support collagen production, improve hydration, and help maintain a healthy skin barrier.

And sunscreen? That's nonnegotiable!

We can work diligently to improve pigmentation, but without consistent sun protection, new discoloration can develop and existing pigmentation can return.

It's About Healthy Skin, Not Just Pretty Skin

I don't believe in chasing quick results at the expense of your skin's health.

I want to understand why your skin is behaving the way it is, how it responds to treatment, and what we can do to improve its overall condition.

Sometimes that means moving forward with corrective treatments. Other times, it means slowing down and giving your skin what it needs to recover.

Healthy skin is built through consistency, patience, and the right combination of professional treatments and home care.

So, if you've been considering chemical peels but are a little nervous about what to expect, don't be!

We'll work together to develop a plan that's appropriate for your skin, your lifestyle, and your goals.

Because at Rilassare Esthetics, it's not about how aggressively we can treat your skin — it's about how beautifully we can help it age.
